The artwork, commissioned by the city of Stockholm, consists of a wobbly construction of concrete matchboxes: a tribute to everyday life, its heroes and the beauty in the humdrum.

Jockum Nordström, b. 1963 in Stockholm (SE), lives and works in Stockholm (SE).
Jockum Nordström tries to escape the daily speed of communication and technological innovations through his work. He concentrates on a slow and precise process of drawing, painting, cutting, composing and pasting. Inspired by music, folk stories and outsider art, he creates other worlds where imagination and creativity have no limits. Nordström composes fragile collages and graphite drawings in which he evokes a surprising universe populated with old-school sailors, jazz musicians, delicately chronicled flora and fauna, ships and noblemen from past epochs. Through his consistent use of the techniques of drawing and collage, the elegant and carefully composed fragments form a mysterious world, flirting even with the sinister. Looking at Nordström’s work, these excerpts, and particularly their specific mode of representation, trigger our imagination and stories start to develop like fine meandering lines. Although everyday observations play a role in the formation of the works, it is difficult to tell which elements are based on reality and which are an expression of Nordström's fantasies or desires. The same moving fragility appears in his sculptures, small-scale models of an obsolete modernist dream showing the empty space behind the façade and the breakable, cardboard skeleton. The stories can take the shape of fairy tales, but mostly they take on more complex forms that question modern-day alienation.
Jockum Nordström has had solo exhibitions at Contemporary Arts Center (New Orleans), La Criée (Rennes), LaM (Lille), Camden Arts Centre (London), Institut Suédois (Paris), Skissernas Museum (Lund), Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Uddevalla Konsthall and Liljevachs Konsthal (Stockholm).
His work has featured in group shows at Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus), Tate Modern (London), MoMA (New York), IMMA (Dublin), SFMOMA (San Francisco), S.M.A.K. (Ghent), National Gallery of Iceland (Reykjavik) and Hammer Museum (Los Angeles).
Jockum Nordström joined the gallery in 2009.
Wishing Well is Jockum Nordström’s fourth solo exhibition at Zeno X Gallery. The show consists of recent collages, drawings and sculptures.
The new pencil drawings and watercolour collages build on the motifs and imagination that mark Nordström’s oeuvre: characters, fauna and flora in extraordinary scenery and unusual situations. Each work consists of different elements which have been sourced from reality or have sprung from Nordström’s fantasies and desires. His observations of the vast Scandinavian landscape are the inspiration for his more abstract collages.
The narrative is an important aspect in the artist’s practice. The stories are often inspired by everyday observations, with a focus on human relationships and the setting in which they take place. Today, the artist mainly works in Gotland – a remote place in Sweden – making natural elements increasingly prominent in his work, as in Ek (Oak) and Suset i skogen (Wind in the forest). In Barndom (Childhood), Nordström refers to the modernist blocks in the suburbs of Stockholm where he grew up.
Nordström’s work method has remained constant: he cuts, paints or draws elements from different worlds and eras before bringing them together in his own story. For instance, the three figures in Drunkare (Drunkard) are based on characters from different periods, myths or folklores. The elegant and meticulously composed fragments form a mysterious world that flirts with the sinister.
Central to this exhibition are the new mobile sculptures. The sculptures produce their own sound but are also accompanied by musical fragments. All materials have been recycled from his studio. The work Wishing Well, which lends its name to the title of the exhibition, refers to the coins he found in his studio and used to balance the sculptures.
Jockum Nordström is currently working on a solo exhibition that will open at Liljevalchs konsthall (Stockholm) in the spring of 2023. Recently, he had institutional exhibitions at La Criée centre d’art contemporain (Rennes) in 2021 and at the Skissernas Museum (Lund) in 2020.
Work by the artist has entered the permanent collections of Centre Pompidou (Paris), MoMA (New York), S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Cleveland Museum of Art (Ohio), Göteborgs Konstmuseum (Gothenburg), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), Magasin III (Stockholm), Moderna Museet (Stockholm) and others.
Zeno X Gallery is proud to present the third solo exhibition of Jockum Nordström. The title, Rymden tystar ljudet, can be freely translated as ‘the spaces quieten the sound’.
Jockum Nordström (b. 1963, Stockholm) tries through his work to escape the daily pace of communication and technological innovations. He concentrates on a slow and meticulous process of drawing, painting, cutting, composing and gluing. Inspired by music, folk tales and outsider art, he creates other worlds in which the imagination and creativity have no limits. The collages seem to conjure up bygone times but also to evoke a new and particular world. Although everyday observations play a clear role in the emergence of the works, it is often difficult to find out which elements are based on reality and which are an expression of Nordström’s fantasies or desires. Through the flat accumulation of the collages, each work could be a fragment from a puppet show.
Specific to this exhibition are the abstract collages that Nordström is displaying for the first time. These works are strongly reminiscent of Nordström’s cardboard sculptures; they are often made of pieces of matchboxes and function as architectural models. The sculptures also refer to the dreary modernist blocks in the suburbs of Stockholm, where Nordström grew up. The collages could be floor plans of interiors, but they could just as well refer to envelopes and folded letters. Moreover he was inspired by a black and white book on African tapestries and textile patterns.
Jockum Nordström will hold a solo show in 2018 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. He has had solo exhibitions at LaM, Musée d’Art Contemporain et d’Art Brut in Lille, at the Camden Arts Centre in London, the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. His works have also featured in group exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, MoMA in New York, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, SFMOMA in San Francisco, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, the Albertina in Vienna, and many more.
