ANTON CORBIJN: THE LIVING AND THE DEAD
Bucerius Kunstforum, Hamburg, Germany June 7 - September 16, 2018
Anton Corbijn, b. 1955 in Strijen (NL), lives and works in The Hague (NL).
Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer and (art) director. He is best known for his black-and-white photographs of actors, musicians, artists and models. However, he should not be categorized as a celebrity photographer, but rather as someone who captures personalities. Some of his photographs have become iconic images of modern pop culture. Alongside his photographic work, Corbijn has directed music videos for Depeche Mode, U2, Nirvana and Joy Division, for example. Corbijn made his feature film debut in 2007 with Control, about the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. He subsequently directed A Most Wanted Man (2014) and Life (2015).
Anton Corbijn has had solo exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Bucerius Kunst Forum (Hamburg), Fotografiska (Stockholm), FOMU (Antwerp), Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (The Hague), S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Kestner Gesellschaft (Hanover), Groninger Museum (Groningen), Münchner Stadtmuseum (Munich), Museum Morsbroich (Leverkusen), Museum Moderne Kunst (Dresden), Foam (Amsterdam), Kunstmuseum Bochum, Museo Fortuny (Venice), Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Bologna), Castello di Rivoli (Turin) and Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
His work has featured in group shows at Bozar (Brussels), Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), Multimedia Art Museum (Moscow), Noordbrabants Museum (‘s Hertogenbosch) and Museum Weserburg (Bremen).
Anton Corbijn joined the gallery in 1996.
Zeno X Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a series of exhibitions that shed light on the different decades of the gallery. From April 2 onwards, '40 YEARS Zeno X Gallery: the nineties' presents the seven artists who joined the gallery in the 1990s: Luc Tuymans (1990), Marlene Dumas (1993), Mark Manders (1994), Cristof Yvoré (1994), Anton Corbijn (1996), Dirk Braeckman (1999) and Johannes Kahrs (1999). The show brings historical works into dialogue with recent pieces created specially for this exhibition.
Zeno X Gallery is pleased to present ‘# 5’, the new exhibition by Anton Corbijn (1955). It is the third time that work of this renowned photographer is presented in the gallery. The exhibition is a continuation of sorts of his recent retrospective entitled 1-2-3-4, which was recently on view in the Hague Museum of Photography and Fotografiska in Stockholm. This exhibition presents works from the period 1990 to 2013.
After having spent his childhood in the Dutch Strijen, Corbijn leaves for London in 1976, in the footsteps of the musicians and bands he admires and wants to portray. In the period between 1972 and 1989, he will only shoot personalities from the music world. Later, numerous other celebrities and artists will become the subject of his photographs. He tries every to get every artist whose work he admires - from the world of fashion, music, film or any other - in front of his camera. About this, he himself says
“Starting as a young, shy boy I was initially impressed by musicians, even on a local level. But very quickly I realised that I wanted to take pictures of people who, like me, have a feeling that what they create is the most important thing in their lives. It’s never about fame, and it does not matter if they express themselves with music, film, paintings… It’s about people who give everything. When I see that, I want to take a portrait of the person.”
One of the truly unique pictures in the exhibition is David Bowie (mask), Montreal. Corbijn directed the music video of Arcade Fire’s song Reflector from 2013, for which David Bowie provided vocals. In the clip, the band members wear masks, which can, just as in the above-mentioned work, also be seen in the photo Arcade Fire, Montreal, also presented in this exhibition.
Corbijn is still a convinced user of analogue photography, even if the printing is done digitally:
“I still work in analogue. There are some elements of digital photography that I don’t really like, such as the fact that you see the results immediately. I’ve always thought photography was a bit of an adventure so to come home with the film, develop it then look at the results has more of a sense of excitement. Digital changes your end results because if you think it’s not totally there then you are going to shoot it differently - you get the perfect image but that kills it for me as I like the imperfection. For square format I use a Hasselblad and for 35mm I use a Leica - they’re both beautiful cameras.”
In addition, Corbijn also works as a creative/artistic director for several bands such as, for instance, U2 and Depeche Mode. For many years, he has regularly directed their music videos and designed CD and record covers. As a kind of invisible member of the group, he has managed to portray these bands in a very intimate and innovative manner.
In the past ten years, he has also directed the award-winning films Control (2007), The American (2010), A Most Wanted Man (2014) and Life (2016).
Anton Corbijn has had solo exhibitions at the Municipal Museum in The Hague, the Museum of Photography in The Hague, FoMu in Antwerp, S.M.A.K. Ghent, the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover, the Groninger Museum in Groningen, the Tennis Palace Art Museum in Helsinki, the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, the Manezh Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg, the Museum of Modern Art in Dresden, FOAM in Amsterdam, the Kunstmuseum Bochum, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, the Ystads Konstmuseum Ystad, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, the Cobra Museum, Amstelveen, and many others.
Zeno X Gallery has the great pleasure to present ‘New Squares’, the second solo exhibition by Anton Corbijn (° 1955, Strijen, NL). It is the second time work of this renowned Dutch photographer is shown in the gallery. In 1976, Corbijn moved to London and came into contact with bands that inspired him. It was mainly their positive response to his work that encouraged him to continue and develop his own signature style. Meanwhile, the world has become his home and he travels from one appointment to another. Recently, his new film ‘A Most Wanted Man’, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Willem Dafoe in the lead roles, was presented at the Sundance Festival in Toronto. His first feature film ‘Control’, about the life of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division who lost his life at a young age, came out in 2007. A few years later, he collaborated with George Clooney on ‘The American’ (2010).
In addition to a selection of photographs from his previous exhibition ‘Inwards and Onwards’, this exhibition brings a number of remarkable portraits that have never previously been exhibited. While Corbijn, especially in the period from 1972 to 1989, mainly photographed musicians and bands, he has since 1990 also been portraying artists, models, writers and actors. A large part of ‘New Squares’ consists of recent portraits of artists, but musicians are represented as well. Corbijn tries to penetrate deep into the mind and soul of the person he portrays, without wanting to capture their whole personality in one single photo. His approach is characterized by a great sense of empathy combined with a great capacity for wonder. He does not like to be described as a rock star or celebrity photographer. The glitz and glamour some people surround themselves with does not appeal to him all that much. Rather, it is the creative mind of the subject that intrigues him. Corbijn became more interested in the figure of the painter through his collaboration with musician and painter Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) on a short film about him, and his work on the ‘Strippinggirls’ project (2000), with Marlene Dumas. Moreover, his grandfather was a painter as well. What fascinates Corbijn in the figure of the artist is his unstoppable urge to create. To him, the struggle that usually goes hand in hand with it makes it all the more interesting. Corbijn sets out to find the very artistic passion that characterizes him in people working in other disciplines. In the end, the people he portrays are almost always people he wanted to meet for one reason or another. In this way, both the subject and the author reveal something about themselves.
Anton Corbijn has had solo exhibitions in FoMu, Antwerp (BE), S.M.A.K., Gent (BE), Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (DE), Groninger Museum, Groningen (NL), Tennis Palace Art Museum, Helsinki (FI), Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen (DE), Manezh Central Exhibition Hall, St. Petersburg (RU), Museum of Modern Art, Dresden (DE), FOAM, Amsterdam (NL), Kunstmuseum Bochum, Bochum (DE), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (NL), Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (IT), Castello di Rivoli, Turin (IT), Ystad Konst Museum, Ystad (SE), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow (RU), Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland (U.S.), and Cobra Museum, Amstelveen (NL). His work has been included in group exhibitions at ICA, London (UK), Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (JP), Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam (NL), Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (NL) and many others. ‘Inwards and Onwards’ was shown at Foam in Amsterdam in 2011, and in the Kunstmuseum Bochum two years later.
