Johannes Kahrs, b. 1965 in Bremen (DE), lives and works in Berlin (DE).
The paintings and drawings by Johannes Kahrs are always based on existing imagery. For years he has been collecting images from magazines, newspapers and films, which he then reinterprets and deprives of their original informative context. He does so by cropping, blurring and shifting their perspectives. The images transform into fragmented pictures with no coherent narrative, making them feel both familiar and foreign to the viewer. His work contains references to popular culture, politics and history. By appropriating the photographs, Kahrs examines the symbolic meaning of images in mass media and pop culture. He researches our processes of looking, associating and signifying, sometimes turning the observer into a voyeur. Kahrs's specific pictorial treatment infuses the subject matter with an intensified form of corporality and sensuality. The colours roughly resemble the spectrum of a bruise, and as such they contribute to the dubious implications of the image.
Johannes Kahrs has had solo exhibitions at Hall Art Foundation – Schloss Derneburg, FRAC Île-de-France (Paris), Kunsthalle Nürnberg (Nuremberg), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (Dresden), Centre d’Art PasquArt (Biel), S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Kunstverein München (Munich), GAMeC (Bergamo), FRAC des Pays de la Loire (Carquefou), Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art (London) and Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin).
Johannes Kahrs has participated in Manifesta (2004), the Lyon Biennial (2015), the Taipei Biennial (2002) and the Mediations Biennial in Poznan (2014). His work has featured in group shows at Centre Pompidou (Paris), National Portrait Gallery (London), Kunstpalast (Düsseldorf), SFMOMA (San Francisco), Dallas Museum of Art, Caixa Forum (Barcelona), FRAC Auvergne (Clermont-Ferrand) and National Museum (Poznan).
Johannes Kahrs joined the gallery in 1999.
Johannes Kahrs (b. 1965 in Bremen, lives and works in Berlin) presents his tenth solo exhibition at Zeno X Gallery. His paintings are based on images from magazines, newspapers, films or his own photographic material. When he paints, Kahrs liberates the image from its original context. In the process, he problematises the status and value of the image in contemporary visual culture.
In recent years, Kahrs has experimented more with the materiality of paint. He still starts out either from a photographic reality or a drawing but questions the narrative by approaching his source material in a new way. In doing so he combines different work methods: body parts are enlarged, imaginary details are added, parts of the canvas are blurred or the paint is stripped off. He allows more imagination into his working process and makes the materiality of the paint part of the subject. The title of the exhibition refers to the first two sentences of Arthur Rimbaud’s poem ‘Le Bateau Ivre’. The words describe an alienating feeling reminding Kahrs of his own creative process: starting to work without knowing where he will end up.
In this exhibition, the artist presents a striking number of portraits. Both unknown people and famous figures appear on the canvas. However, it is not the person represented that is the subject of the work, but rather the way the character is publicly portrayed. It is the facial expression, the body posture or the way of moving that intrigues Kahrs: as if they are part of a theatre play. The gaze is an important element in Kahrs’ work as it creates a tension between the image and the viewer, raising questions about the act of looking and sometimes turning the observer into a voyeur.
Johannes Kahrs has previously had solo exhibitions at FRAC Île-de-France, Paris (2016), Kunsthalle Nürnberg (2014), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (2013), Art Centre PasquArt, Biel (2012), GAMeC, Bergamo (2007), Parasol Unit for Contemporary Art, London (2006), Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2002), FRAC Pays de la Loire, Carquefou (2001), Kunstverein München (2001) and S.M.A.K., Ghent (2001).
The work of Johannes Kahrs is included in the public collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris, MOCA, Los Angeles, MoMA, New York, UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, S.M.A.K., Ghent, FRAC Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, SFMOMA, San Francisco, FRAC Picardie, Amiens, FRAC Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, Fundaçao de Serralves, Porto, and others.
Zeno X Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a series of exhibitions that shed light on the different decades of the gallery. From April 2 onwards, '40 YEARS Zeno X Gallery: the nineties' presents the seven artists who joined the gallery in the 1990s: Luc Tuymans (1990), Marlene Dumas (1993), Mark Manders (1994), Cristof Yvoré (1994), Anton Corbijn (1996), Dirk Braeckman (1999) and Johannes Kahrs (1999). The show brings historical works into dialogue with recent pieces created specially for this exhibition.
Zeno X Gallery is pleased to present Hell I Am, the new solo exhibition of Johannes Kahrs (b. 1965, Bremen).
The paintings of Johannes Kahrs are always based on photographs or film stills. For years already he has been collecting images from magazines, newspapers or films, and he himself sometimes also picks up a camera. The flatness of his paintings suggests, as it were, the intermediary intervention of the screen. Through painting, Kahrs emancipates in a sense the image from its original context or frame of reference; anecdote and narrative are avoided. Thanks to interventions such as zooming, fragmentation and the shifting of perspective, he fictionalizes his ‘found images’ drawn from pop culture, advertising and (political) history. Reality is questioned by being recorded once more in an entirely new way. In addition, Kahrs problematizes the status and value of the image in contemporary visual culture.
The portraits in the exhibition thematize watching and being watched. The subject is confronted with a camera and has to assume a pose; while one stares into the lens, the other timidly tries to look away. Kahrs here sees a double parallel between the camera and the painting. On the one hand, the visitor to the exhibition is confronted with paintings and must answer the question as to how to deal with this medium. On the other hand, painting, like photographing, can have an invasive effect; the artist not only asks himself how he can picture the subject, but also how close he can get to it.
Various people portrayed are in a state of ecstasy, of physical pleasure or suffering. These emotional extremes lie beyond the possibilities of the medium of painting. For this reason, it is a challenge for Kahrs to try to bring these emotions to life. Works such as Untitled (dancing) and Untitled (j - back) rather show figures that want to withdraw from the gaze of the other. The result is an almost voyeuristic tension between the ecstatic men and the women who don’t want to be scrutinized.
Johannes Kahrs has had solo exhibitions at, among others, FRAC Île-de-France in Paris (2016), Kunsthalle Nürnberg (2014), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (2013), Art Centre Pasquart in Biel (2012), GAMeC in Bergamo (2007), Parasol Unit for Contemporary Art in London (2006), Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2002), FRAC Pays de la Loire in Carquefou (2001), Kunstverein München in Munich (2001) and S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2001).
His work has featured in exhibitions in Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, SFMOMA in San Francisco, National Portrait Gallery in London, Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Hayward Gallery in London, Bozar in Brussels, and many more.
The work of Johannes Kahrs is in the public collections of Centre Pompidou in Paris, MOCA in Los Angeles, MoMA in New York, UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, FRAC Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, SFMOMA in San Francisco, FRAC Picardie in Amiens, FRAC Pays de la Loire in Carquefou, Fundaçao de Serralves in Porto, and others.
Zeno X Gallery is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by Johannes Kahrs (1965, Bremen). The exhibition Early this mornin’, ooh combines new paintings with works that were shown earlier this year at the Lyon Biennial. The exhibition will travel in May 2016 to FRAC Ile-de-France in Paris and be completed with a number of important works from private collections.
At the Lyon Biennial, along with his paintings, Johannes Kahrs presented for the first time part of his image archive. Photographs and film stills form the basis of his work. For years, he has been collecting images from magazines, newspapers or movies, along with images he himself occasionally records. In his painting, Kahrs as it were frees the image from its original context or frame of reference; anecdote and narrative are avoided. Through interventions such as zooming, fragmentation or shifts in perspective, he fictionalizes his ‘images trouvées’ from popular culture, advertising, and (political) history. Reality, by depicting it in an entirely new way, is called into question.
The subjects he portrays are diverse yet in this exhibition he presents a remarkable number of portraits. Famous and popular figures like Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and Justin Bieber are depicted in his paintings. The way in which their lives - which have become almost entirely part of the public domain - are portrayed by the media fascinates Kahrs much more than their ‘talents’. The work Untitled (thomas), for instance, is based on a ‘mug shot’ that was made after the young singer’s arrest by the police. The figures look lonely, lost and helpless. The portraits can be read in a different way as well; as mosaic-like self-portraits of the artist.
Untitled (god) is the ambiguous title of Kahrs’ portrait of Bill Cosby. Since 2000, the world famous star of The Cosby Show has been the subject of sexual abuse allegations. Kahrs is fascinated by this lawsuit because of the change in the way Cosby is perceived; as the first African-American person with his own television show, he was regarded by many as a role model, while the recent allegations expose him as a monster.
Untitled (chair bed bag man) was inspired by a picture the artist took in a hotel room, and also refers to the painting ‘Intérieur’ (1868-1869) by the French artist Edgar Degas. The subject of the work has been under discussion for decades, and some even claim that it depicts the scene of a rape. Because of the special perspective used by Kahrs - the female character is entirely absent - he manages to avoid this debate.
The exhibition title refers to an old blues song by Robert Johnson (1911-1938), namely “Me and the Devil Blues’. Not much is known with certainty about the life of this blues legend. According to a well-known myth, he sold his soul to the devil to become a guitar virtuoso.
Earlier solo exhibitions of Johannes Kahrs include, among others, Kunsthalle Nürnberg (2014), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (2013), CentrePasquArt in Biel (2012), GAMeC in Bergamo (2007), Parasol Unit for Contemporary Art in London (2006), Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2002), FRAC Pays de la Loire in Carquefou (2001), Kunstverein München in Munich (2001) and S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2001).
His work was also included in exhibitions at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, SFMOMA in San Francisco, Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Hayward Gallery in London, Bozar in Brussels, and many others.

Zeno X Gallery is proud to announce “Tropical Nights”, the seventh solo exhibition by the German painter Johannes Kahrs (°1965, Bremen). Although Kahrs is also known for his charcoal drawings and films, he chose to focus on painting for this show. In these new works he continues to experiment with various painting genres, including portraiture, still life, landscape and the interior. The painting depicts a fragmented or isolated scene, separating it from its original embedded context. “The painting is what remains and with it the mystery of the painting” (J. Kahrs).
Kahrs is not searching for specific content or for a real situation when collecting images. A picture only becomes a reason to paint when it affects him emotionally and induces a creative sensation. As Ulrich Loock writes in “Transcendence in Flesh and Blood” the artist liberates the painting from its origins and models so it is irrelevant to compare them. Kahrs is much more interested in solving painterly problems and avoiding narration in figurative painting. Any possible interpretation of the painting is in the eye of its beholder and becomes a reason to question perception and experience. Ralph Rugoff states the following:
While his iconographic repertoire sometimes suggests an ambition to confront contemporary history, Kahrs seems mainly concerned with how we relate to images today (which is a historical development in itself, of course). One of the principal psychological effects engineered by our world that we only witness. Kahrs’s paintings work against the grain of this kind of detached, photographic way of seeing. The oblique angles, disjunctive framing, and general levels of visual ‘noise’ in his pictures unsettle any lingering notion that we can remain safely detached, at a hygienic distance, from the pictures that we view. (in: Johannes Kahrs, 2009, Hatje Cantz)
In recent years Johannes Kahrs has expanded his colour palette to a softer and brighter spectrum. Now the drama and uncanny atmosphere in his works unfold in broad daylight. The human body is still one of Kahrs’s chief concerns. “Tropical Nights” is poised on the fragile borders between reality, truth, fiction, fantasy and dreams. His intention is not to remember existing places or experiences. Instead he activates an image machinery. Paintings such as “Untitled (sea)” and “Untitled (shell)” are more than just an ordinary representation of something we are all familiar with. They are like keys to the subconscious mind, awakening it just like the Madeleine biscuit in Marcel Proust famous novel “A la recherche du temps perdu”. The moment right before you fall asleep and just before you wake up can be revealing and confronting. You no longer control your senses so random associations are easily created. In “Untitled (man asleep)” and “Untitled (head P.M.)” Kahrs seems to suggest that there is something going on that eludes our observation. The emphasis seemingly is on isolated body parts but the state of mind is difficult to trace back.
In April 2014 a solo exhibition of Johannes Kahrs’s new work will open at Kunsthalle Nürnberg in Germany. Previous solo exhibitions include GAMeC in Bergamo (IT), Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art in London (GB), FRAC Pays de la Loire in Carquefou (FR), Kunstverein München (DE), S.M.A.K. in Ghent (BE) and Centre PasquArt in Biel (CH). Kahrs has participated in many group shows including at Centre Pompidou in Paris (FR), Dallas Museum of Art (USA), SFMOMA in San Francisco (USA), Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden (DE), Castello di Rivoli in Turin (IT), Hayward Gallery in London (GB), Bozar in Brussels (BE) and many more. His work is also included in the collection of Centre Pompidou in Paris (FR), Musée Carré d’Art in Nîmes (FR), FRAC des Pays de la Loire in Carrequefou (FR), FRAC Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand (FR), Galerie Neue Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (DE), Hamburger Bahnhoff in Berlin (DE), MoMa in New York (USA), Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (USA), Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (USA), Dallas Museum of Art (USA), Museo Serralves in Porto (PT) and Fundacio “La Caixa” Contemporary Art Collection in Barcelona (ES).
